Project Overview

Three block grammars for the country's health research campus.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) complex in Setia Alam consolidates various government health research agencies into a single integrated campus. Designed with a strong focus on functionality, airflow, and energy efficiency, the campus supports medical research, training, and policy development.
The architecture embraces a climate-responsive strategy, incorporating cross-ventilation, daylighting, and shading across its administrative, laboratory, and public zones.
Use of PBM Ventilation Blocks
Three PBM VentBlock models were applied across the NIH campus to enhance passive ventilation, shading, and architectural rhythm.

🔹 Featured Blocks:
VB 140.34 – A clean rectangular opening block, offering simple, modern screening ideal for long façades and mechanical areas.
VB 140.33 – A variation of VB 140.34, but with two vertical internal fins that divide the opening into three vertical slots, creating a more refined and controlled light/air flow.
VB 301.125 – A bold waffle-style square block featuring 9 smaller square openings. This model delivers a striking geometric aesthetic while allowing consistent airflow and visual depth.

Together, these blocks allowed the architects to:
•Vary transparency and shading across different zones
•Maintain a cohesive concrete aesthetic throughout the campus
•Support passive design strategies in a large-scale public institution
