Guides

Step-by-step methods for installing PBM concrete products on site.

This section provides reference installation methods for PBM’s range of concrete building products. Each guide includes a demonstration video, list of required materials and tools, and a sequential method to ensure structural performance and finish quality. Specifications shown are general guidance — site-specific design, loading and detailing should follow the consulting engineer’s drawings.

How to install PBM Ventilation Blocks (VB, VB+, VBB)

A reference method for installing PBM Ventilation Blocks as a screen wall, facade infill or ventilation panel. The procedure applies to the VB, VB+ and VBB series. For load-bearing or structural applications, refer to the project engineer’s drawings.

Safety Note

Wear gloves and safety shoes before starting. Keep the working area clear of debris.

Installation Method

Step 01 - Prepare and Outline the Area

Clean the substrate and confirm it is level, dry and free of debris. Mark the wall position using a chalk line and mason’s line. Check overall dimensions against the architect’s drawing and confirm the opening percentage and pattern direction of the selected block.

Mix cement and sand at the ratio specified by the engineer (typically 1:3 or 1:4) and add water gradually. The mortar should hold its shape on the trowel without sagging. Mix only the volume that can be used within 30 minutes to avoid setting on site.

Lay a uniform mortar bed (approximately 10 mm) along the marked line. Place the first block, then tap gently with a rubber hammer to seat it. Check level and plumb on every block. The accuracy of the first row determines alignment for the full wall.

Apply mortar to the vertical and horizontal contact faces of the next block. Place it tight against the first, maintaining a consistent joint width. Re-check level, plumb and alignment with the spirit level and mason’s line before moving on

Continue laying course by course. Insert starter bars and brick mesh at intervals specified by the engineer (typically every 2–3 courses) to tie the wall back to the structural frame. Maintain a consistent bond pattern and stagger vertical joints where the block design allows.

Once mortar has begun to firm up, tool the joints with a jointing tool to compact and shape them. Brush off excess mortar from the block face before it hardens. Inspect for hollow joints and repoint as needed.

Allow the wall to cure for the period specified by the mortar supplier (typically 7 days minimum) before applying any surface treatment. A breathable water repellent is recommended for external walls to reduce moisture ingress and surface staining. If painting, use a masonry paint compatible with cementitious substrates.

Post-Installation Note

Installation of PBM Ventilation Blocks must be carried out in accordance with the recommended method using suitable mortar, alignment guides and reinforcement to ensure structural stability and long-term performance. Where applicable, application of a water repellent coating is advised for additional protection against moisture and environmental staining.
